Former Nunawading Elite Athletes

 

Brendon Smith

Brendon joined the Club as a member in 2007 and in 2017 was awarded a 10-year Service Award for his contribution to the Club. Brendon had come through the squad program at Nunawading and continued to improve on an annual basis.

At the 2018 Pan Pac Trials, Brendon finished 4th in the 400m individual medley. 

After a stella performance at the 2020 Olympic selection trials, he found himself claiming a spot in the Olympic Games. Brendon was first to touch the wall in the 400 individual medley events with a time of 4:10:04, breaking the previous record by a tenth of a second. Brendon went on to win the bronze medal at the Games in the 400 IM event.

  • 2020 2020 Olympic Games, Tokyo, Japan

 

Matt Temple

Matt Temple joined the Club in 2016 and was coached by High Performance Coach Scott Talbot. Since joining the club, Matt improved very quickly and was becoming a serious contender for Australian teams.

At the 2018 Commonwealth Games Trials Matt finished 5th in the 100 butterfly final.

At the 2019 Victorian Open Championships, Matt was named Male Swimmer of the Meet after winning the Men’s 100m butterfly in an extremely fast 52.67.

With an amazing performance at the 2020 Olympic Trial, Matt won the 200 butterfly which earned him a spot on the Australian Olympic team. Matt also found himself qualifying for the 100 Freestyle events at the Olympics. Matt went on to win 2 Olympic bronze medals in the men’s 4×100 freestyle relay and the mixed 4×100 medley relay.

Matt has represented Australia at the following meets:

  • 2020 Olympic Games, Tokyo, Japan

 

Bowen Gough

Bowen joined Nunawading Swimming Club in early 2015 and represented the club at the 2015 Australian Age Championships. Bowen had an impressive meet, winning the Boys 16 years 200m Butterfly, and claimed 2 Silver and 1 Bronze medal. After his fantastic performances at these Championships, Bowen was selected to represent Australia at the 2015 FINA World Junior Championships in Singapore

Bowen continued his fine form claiming 1 silver and 2 bronze medals at the 2016 Australian Age Nationals.  At his final Australian Age Nationals in 2017, Bowen had an outstanding meet claiming 1 Gold, 4 Silver and 1 Bronze.

Bowen finished 4th in the 200 butterfly and 7th in the 100 butterfly at the 2018 Commonwealth Games Trials. He also won silver in the 200m butterfly at the 2018 Australian Short Course Championships.

Bowen has represented Australia at the following meets:

  • 2019 World University Games, Naples, Italy

  • 2021 World University Games team

 

Sophie Caldwell

At the 2018 Commonwealth Games Trials, Sophie placed 8th in the 400 individual medley final. Sophie then went on to represent Victoria at the Singapore National Championships in June 2018. At this meet she won 4 gold medals in a dominant display.

Sophie has represented Australia at the following meets:

  • 2019 World University Games, Naples, Italy

 

Julia Hawkins

At her first Australian Age Championships in 2013, Julia was crowned Australian champion in the girls 12-13 years 50m Freestyle. She was also part of the Gold medal winning 14 and under girls 4×50 Medley Relay team and the girls 14 and under 4×50 freestyle relay team that won silver.

In 2014 Julia was selected to represent Swimming Australia at the FINA Youth program in Doha, which took place during the 2014 World Short Course Championships. She was one of 2 swimmers selected from Australia to attend and experience the World Championship environment and draw inspiration from the World’s best athletes.

After her fantastic performances at the 2016 Australian Age Championships, Julia represented Australia at the Junior Pan Pacific Championships which were held in Hawaii.

Belinda Hocking

Belinda Hocking was a member of Nunawading swimming Club from October 2012 when she moved from the AIS in Canberra, until her retirement in 2016.

Belinda is a triple Olympian and has recorded some of the fastest times in history for the 200m backstroke. Some of her Career highlights include Gold in the 200m backstroke and Bronze in the 100m backstroke at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, and Silver in the 200 Backstroke at the 2013 World Swimming Championships.

Joshua Beaver

After narrowly missing the 2012 Olympic Team, Joshua burst onto the International scene in 2014 at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where he secured 2 Silver and 1 Bronze medal in the Backstroke events. Josh then went on to make the Australian team to compete at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.

Ashley Delaney

Ashley Delaney was a member at Nunawading from 2005 until his retirement from swimming in 2016 and was originally awarded the David Cook Scholarship to assist him with his transition from living in the country and moving to Melbourne once he had completed Year 12.  Ashley competed for Australia on numerous occasions including:

  • 2006 PanPacific Championships in Victoria, Canada

  • 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China where he finished 5th in the final of the 100m Backstroke, 10th in the 200m Backstroke and swam in the heats of the 4 x 100m Medley relay team that won the silver.

  • 2008 World Short Course Championships in Manchester, England

  • 2010 PanPacific Championships in Irvine, USA

  • 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India where he won gold in the 4 x 100m Medley relay, and won three bronze medals in the 50m, 100m and 200m Backstroke events.

  • 2012 World Short Course Championships in Istanbul, Turkey

  • 2013 BHP Billiton Aquatic Super Series in Perth, Australia versus China and South Africa

Sarah Katsoulis

Sarah Katsoulis represented Australia on 11 occasions on senior Australian teams, winning a medal at every International meet.

Meets included:

  • 2000 Oceania Championships, Christchurch, NZ. Gold 50m breast, silver 100 and 200m breast

  • 2002 Commonwealth Games, Manchester, UK

  • 2003 World Championships, Barcelona, Spain

  • 2004 World Short Course Championships, Indianapolis, USA, winning a bronze medal in the 200m breaststroke

  • 2007 World UNI Games, Bangkok, Thailand. Silver 50m and 100 Breast.

  • 2008 World Short Course Championships, Manchester, England where Sarah won a silver in the 50m breaststroke and in the 4 x 100m medley relay

  • 2009 World Championships, Rome, Italy winning a bronze medal in the 200m breaststroke and silver in the 4 x 100m medley relay

  • 2009 Duel in the Pool in Canberra, Australia, winning gold in the 4 x 100 medley relay, silver in the 100m breaststroke and bronze in the 200m breaststroke

Jessica Hansen

Jessica joined Nunawading Swimming Club in January 2014 to train under the watchful eye of High Performance Coach at the time, Rohan Taylor. From a young age Jessica had been one of Victoria’s top breaststroke swimmers and in 2016 she made her Australian team debut being selected onto the World Short Course team.  Since then Jess has been coached by the Club’s High Performance Coach Scott Talbot and has been a consistent medallist at the Australian Championships.  Jess has also gone on to represent Australia at the 2017 World Championships and 2018 Commonwealth Games.  In 2018, Jess won gold in the Women’s 100m breaststroke in 1:05.14 at the Australian Short course Championships. In early 2019, Jess was elected as a athlete leader in the Australian Swim Team as the team prepares for the 2020 Olympics.

Madeleine Scott

Madeleine Scott has been a member of the Nunawading Swimming Club since January 2017 after making the move from Canberra to the club to pursue her swimming campaign under the guidance of High Performance Coach Scott Talbot.  Since making her first Commonwealth Games team in 2014 where she claimed silver in the S9 100 Breaststroke, Madi has gone on to secure a medal at each major International meet including her first Paralympic silver medal in the 4 x 100m medley relay at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio.

In recent events, Madi won gold in the Women’s 50m butterfly and silver in the 100 butterfly and 200 IM Multi-Class events at the 2018 Australian Short Course Championships.  Madi now has her sights set on Tokyo 2020.

Ellen Gandy

Ellen Gandy competed for the Club from 2008 until her retirement from swimming in 2014.
After competing for Great Britain in the 2008 and 2012 Olympics, Gandy decided to become an Australian Citizen.

After sitting out of International competition for a year, Elly competed in her first Competition as an Australian representative at the 2013 World Cup meets in Europe and later competed for Australia at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and Pan Pacific Games.

 

Travis Mahoney

Travis Mahoney made his International debut at the World Short Course Swimming Championships in Istanbul, Turkey in December 2012.  He competed in a variety of events including the 200m Backstroke and 400m Individual medley.  He was also a member of the silver medal winning team in the 4 x 100m Freestyle relay and won bronze as a heat swimmer in the 4 x 200m Freestyle relay.


Travis realised his life long dream of becoming an Olympian at the 2016 Rio Olympics where he was a finalist in the Mens 400IM.

Nicholas Groenewald

Nicholas Groenewald won a staggering 22 gold medals throughout his career at the Australian Age Championships (2010-16), including setting nine Australian Age group records.
