Food trends are showing a dramatic increase in the use of the term “natural” on food labels following consumer demands for safer more reassuring food choices.

Commonly when scrolling labels on products you will see natural flavours or natural colours listed, which is no surprise with natural colour sales overtaking artificial colour sales for the first time.

Although the word natural suggests a healthier choice, natural additives have shown similarly harmful effects as the artificial additives, as well as allergic reactions in some individuals.

With most research in the area inconclusive for both the natural and artificial additives and their effects, it’s reassuring to know that food additives go through rigorous safety testing before they can be used in food products.
