Last Friday June 20th, was the shortest day of the year and National Vitamin D Awareness Day.
When daylight is most limited on this day, the Vitamin D message is most important. Currently 50% of the Australian workforce do not venture outside during the sunlit hours of a working day, with 1 in 5 claiming they are just too busy to do this. Add to that indoor exercise, commuting, socialising and running errands, and this increasing indoor lifestyle may have serious health consequences due to lack of Vitamin D from exposure to sun.
With limited availability in food, exposure to sunlight is our primary source of Vitamin D. So as the days get longer, consider having a “D-break” by ditching the desk, and heading outside for a break in the sun or taking your training outdoors. Don’t forget to roll your sleeves up!
