VIS Nutrition Tip #11 – Exotic Foods

It’s exciting to see some of the rare and exotic foods, especially vegetables, that are now available. While some of us don’t like change, others are always on the lookout for something new.

When it comes to diet, we know that variety is the key, so utilising more and different vegetables in our diet may provide health benefits through a variety of different vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants.

Some of those exotic varieties being discovered include Gay Choy, Tesoro tomato, Taro, and Winter melon. You usually won’t find these varieties in the local supermarket, so try heading to markets such as Springvale, Footscray or Dandenong which service more diverse ethnic groups who may be contributing to the demand for these exotic fruit and vegetables.

Your challenge this week is to buy and try a new and different vegetable!
