Performance Stream

Athlete progressions are decided within the coaching team.
The High Performance Coach oversees the performance stream.
Selection and re-selection into performance squads is completed after major championships.

NATIONAL AGE DEVELOPMENT SQUAD

Purpose:

The National Age Development Squad is the entry level squad in the performance pathway and assists athletes to perform at the Victorian Age and Australia Age Championship meets. Athletes are primarily 12-14 years of age and attend 5-6 sessions per week with participants developing all aspects of stroke technique, fitness levels and race skills to prepare for competition.

Entry into the squad is by invite from the coach of the National Age Development squad in consultation with the Head Coach. Athletes must demonstrate high levels of commitment and performance to maintain their place within the squad with squad re-selections completed after the major performance championships throughout the year.

Competitions:

Australian Age Championships (where qualified), Victorian Championships (Short and Long Course), Victorian Sprint Championships, Club Championships, All Junior Competition, District Championships and selected qualifying meets throughout the season.

Pathways:

There are three squads that swimmers in the National Age Development Squad can progress to:

State Youth Squad – Swimmers who:

  • have consistently attended all required sessions per week as prescribed by the coach
  • have demonstrated the ability to learn and apply new techniques and skill
  • will normally be 13+ years of age
  • have consistently attended competitions as prescribed by the coach
  • are physically and mentally ready for the move

National Squads – Swimmers who:

  • are invited by the Head Coach
  • have consistently attended all required sessions per week as prescribed by the coach
  • have demonstrated the ability to learn and apply new technique and skill
  • will normally be 14+ years of age
  • have consistently attended competitions as prescribed by the coach
  • are physically and mentally ready for the increase in commitment

Armstrong Squad – Swimmers who:

  • want to continue swimming for general fitness
  • are not showing commitment to practice and competition as set out by the coach
  • are 13+ years of age and do not have a qualifying time for Victorian Age Championships

Progressions from the National Age Development Squad can take place at any time.

Athlete progressions will be decided by the relevant coaches within the coaching team

NATIONAL SQUADS

Purpose:

The National Red Squad assists swimmers who are committed to qualifying for, and performing at, the Australian Age and Open Championships. The squad caters for athletes aged primarily 14 years and over with athletes training 7-8 pool and 2-3 dryland sessions per week. Individual requirements are determined by the National Red Coach and Head Coach based on age, personal goals/aspirations, background and ability.

Swimmers are invited by the National Red Coach and Head Coach to be a member of this squad. Squad re-selections will be completed after the major Performance Championships throughout the year.

The National Blue Squad assists swimmers who are committed to achieving the highest possible performance at the Australian Age and Open Championships with the view of making Australian Open and Youth teams. The National Squad caters for athletes aged primarily 14 years and over with athletes training 8-9 pool and 2-3 dryland sessions per week. Individual requirements are determined by the Head Coach and High Performance Coach based on age, personal goals/aspirations, background and ability.

Swimmers are invited by the Head Coach and High Performance Coach to be a member of this squad. Squad re-selections will be completed after the major Performance Championships throughout the year.

Competitions:

Australian Open Championships (Short Course and Long Course), Australian Age Championships, State Teams (if selected), Victorian Open Championships (Short Course and Long Course), Victorian Age Championships (Short Course and Long Course), Victorian Sprint Championships, Club Championships and selected domestic and interstate qualifying meets throughout the season.

Pathway:

Apart from moving between the two squads, there are three squads that swimmers in National Squads can progress to:

State Youth Squad – Swimmers who:

  • want to continue to swim competitively but cannot commit to the required National Squad training program as set out by the coach
  • do not have a qualifying times for Australian Open or Age Championships
  • are not re-selected after Australian Open or Age Championships
  • have persistent and prolonged illness and or injury (this is done to assist their recovery)
  • have not been able to train to the required standard of the squad

High Performance Squad- Swimmers who:

  • are invited by the High Performance Coach

Armstrong Squad – Swimmers who:

  • want to continue swimming for general fitness
  • are not showing commitment to the program as set out by the coach

HIGH PERFORMANCE SQUAD

The High Performance Squad is a selection based squad which provides an opportunity for athletes to prepare for competition at the highest levels of our sport.

Athletes in the High Performance Squad must be fully committed to the preparation for major international competitions and be prepared to work with the High Performance Coach to establish a specific training and competition plan which will give the best possible opportunity to perform at the pinnacle competitions throughout the 4 year cycle.

Athletes are invited by the High Performance Coach and the Head Coach to be a member of this squad.

Competitions:

Major International Championships, International meets, National Open

Championships (Short Course and Long Course), Victorian Championships (Short Course and Long Course), Club Championships, and domestic and interstate preparation meets throughout the year.
